Dead Letter Office

Correspondence in real time.

In development

You are the postmaster of Graywater Point, a remote coastal town whose dead letter office is overflowing. Read undeliverable mail, investigate the people it was meant for, and decide each letter’s fate: deliver it late, return it, hold it, or archive it forever. Consequences arrive as later correspondence, and the permanent ledger remembers every choice.

The core loop

READ then INVESTIGATE then DECIDE then WAIT (real time) then CONSEQUENCE, repeating. A letter is pulled from the sack onto the desk; the player examines the envelope (addressee, sender, postmark, stamp, condition) and then the contents. Investigation is optional but rewarded through four diegetic tools: the Town Directory, the Graywater Gazette archive, counter conversations, and the Undeliverable Ledger.

Features

  • Four decision verbs — Deliver, Return, Archive, or Hold — each with narrative consequence
  • 2-4 physical-feeling documents per story day; the prototype ships 16 authored letters across seven playable story days.
  • Diegetic investigation tools: Town Directory, searchable Graywater Gazette archive
  • Real-clock pacing with two profiles: Correspondence (one story day per real day) and a faster Story mode
  • A living town: the office bay window is a roughly 30-slot composite vista whose states change overnight as…

Direction

Visual direction ‘Everything the lamp touches’: a pool of warm lamplight on a worn wooden desk with a letter in it and fog-blue dusk in the window beyond, using a two-temperature palette (amber/ochre inside the light, desaturated slate-blue outside) so the eye always rests on the paper.

Who it is for. Primary: adult narrative/cozy mobile players who finish games like A Normal Lost Phone, Florence, Kind Words, Lake, and Unpacking; read literary fiction; dislike extractive free-to-play mechanics; and will consider one clear premium unlock.
